Why Styling Your Home Matters More Than You Think (Even After Renovating)

Photography: Katie Pryde

Over the years, I’ve noticed something that happens in so many homes — including my own in the past. The room is clean, the big pieces are in place, and technically everything is “done”… yet it still doesn’t quite feel how you imagined.

I remember a client once standing in her newly decorated living room with me, hands on hips, saying, “I don’t understand. We’ve bought the sofa, painted the walls and everything matches — but it still doesn’t look like the rooms in magazines.”

And the truth was, nothing was wrong with the room at all. It just hadn’t been styled yet.

When we buy a home or renovate a space, most of the budget naturally goes on the big decisions. Kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, sofas, dining tables. Those are the bones of the house, and they absolutely matter. But interestingly, they’re rarely the thing that makes a room feel warm, inviting and finished.

That final feeling — the one where you walk into a room and think “ahh, this just feels right” — almost always comes from the styling.

Styling is where the room gains personality and atmosphere. It’s the cushions that make the sofa feel inviting, the lamp that creates a soft glow in the evening, the stack of books or a vase of flowers that gives a corner life. None of these things are dramatic on their own, but together they create that sense of comfort and cohesion we’re all drawn to.

What I find fascinating is that styling is often the smallest financial investment in the whole house, yet it creates some of the biggest emotional impact. A home might cost hundreds of thousands of pounds, and renovations can easily run into the tens of thousands — yet the finishing touches that pull a room together often cost very little in comparison. Sometimes they’re pieces you already own, just used in a different way.

In fact, one of the things I love most about working with clients is showing them how much potential is already in their home. We might move a lamp from one corner to another, group a few objects together, add a little colour or texture — and suddenly the room feels calmer, warmer and more intentional.

It’s rarely about buying lots of new things. It’s about understanding how to layer a room properly so that everything works together.

Once people see this, something lovely happens. They start looking at their homes differently. Instead of feeling that something is missing or that they need to start again, they realise they’re often 90% of the way there already.

And that’s exactly why I love teaching this approach.

If you’d enjoy learning how to style your own home with confidence, I’ll be sharing my full Popfox styling method at my VIP Home Styling Masterclass, running from 10am–1pm on Friday 24th April. How to Make Your Home Look Styled (Not Just Tidy)

A Popfox final touches styling project, Perthshire

You know that feeling when the house is finally clean… cushions plumped, surfaces wiped, toys shoved respectfully into baskets…

…and yet it still looks a bit meh?

Tidy, yes.
Finished? Not quite.
Like the homes you save on Pinterest? Absolutely not.

If you’ve ever stood back, hands on hips, thinking “Why doesn’t mine look like that?” — trust me, as someone who’s been there in the past, you’re not doing anything wrong. You’re just missing the styling bit.

Because tidy isn’t the same as styled.

Tidy is practical.
Styled is emotional.

Opt for homely touches you can genuinely enjoy with family & friends - items that create the lifestyle you want to live

Styled rooms feel warm. Relaxed. Inviting. Like someone actually lives there and loves it.

And here’s the secret: it’s rarely about buying more or starting again.

It’s about layering.

A sofa on its own looks flat. Add a throw, a cushion with texture, a lamp glowing beside it, a little stack of books or a plant nearby… suddenly it feels like a moment. A place you want to sit with a cuppa.

It’s the same everywhere.

Art that’s large enough for the wall (tiny frames are generally not your friend).
Soft lighting at eye level.
A mix of old and new.
Something imperfect and personal.

These are the things that make a room feel lived-in and lovely, not showroom stiff.

Most family homes don’t need a renovation. They just need a gentle eye and a few thoughtful tweaks.

Less “start over”.
More “work with what you’ve got, but better”.

Because your home shouldn’t feel like a to-do list.

It should feel like a warm hug at the end of the day.

And the lovely thing? This isn’t about having “good taste” or spending a fortune — it’s a skill you can learn.

On that note…this is the perfect moment to give you an early head’s up about something super-exciting: I’ll be offering a VIP Styling Masterclass in my own home on Friday 24th April 10-1pm, so you can see all my tips and tricks applied to my REAL family home in REAL life! You can nosey round every room and ask all the questions that come to mind, no holds barred. PLUS. during this session we’ll also plan the first room glow-up in your own home! To Move or Not to Move: 10 Key Questions to Ask Yourself

Deciding whether to move or stay in your current home is a significant decision, one that can greatly impact your lifestyle, finances, and overall happiness. While the prospect of a new home can be really exciting, there are numerous factors to consider before making such a pivotal choice! To assist you in navigating this important decision, I've compiled a list of key questions to ask yourself:

1. **Does Your Current Home Still Meet Your Needs?**

Evaluate whether your current home still aligns with your lifestyle and requirements. Consider factors such as space, layout, functionality, and overall suitability for your current and future needs.

2. **Are You Emotionally Attached to Your Current Home?**

Emotional attachment to your home can be a powerful factor in your decision-making process. Reflect on the memories you've created within your current space and whether you're ready to let go of them.

3. **What are Your Long-Term Goals?**

Consider your long-term goals and how your current home fits into them. Are you planning to expand your family, work from home more often, or retire in the near future? Your housing decision should align with your future plans.

4. **Is the Location Still Ideal?**

Assess whether the location of your current home meets your needs in terms of proximity to work, schools, amenities, and community. Think about factors such as commute times, neighbourhood safety, and access to essential services.

5. **Have You Considered Renovation Potential?**

Explore the renovation potential of your current home. Could simple upgrades or renovations enhance its functionality, aesthetics, and value for you? Consulting with an interior designer can provide valuable insights into the possibilities for transforming your space - often, offering solutions you’ve never thought of, which are more cost-effective than moving to get what you need!

6. **What is Your Budget?**

Determine your budget for both moving and staying in your current home. Consider not only the upfront costs of purchasing a new home but also ongoing expenses such as mortgage payments, property taxes, maintenance, and renovation costs.

7. **Are You Willing to Invest in Renovations?**

Assess your willingness to invest time, money, and effort into renovating your current home. Renovations can breathe new life into a space, addressing any shortcomings and enhancing its overall appeal, but they do take commitment. Having said that, so does moving house!

8. **How Do You Feel About Change?**

Reflect on your attitude towards change and whether you're ready for a new chapter in your life. Moving to a new home can bring excitement and opportunities for growth, but it also involves adapting to a new environment and routine.

9. **Have You Explored Alternative Housing Options?**

Research alternative housing options such as downsizing, upsizing, or exploring different neighbourhoods within your current area. There may be viable alternatives to moving that better suit your needs and preferences.

10. **What Does Your Gut Instinct Tell You?**

Trust your instincts and intuition when making this decision. Pay attention to how you feel about the prospect of moving versus staying in your current home. Your gut instinct can often provide valuable insights into what's truly right for you.

Ultimately, the decision to move or stay in your current home is a deeply personal one that requires careful consideration of various factors. By asking yourself these key questions and seeking guidance from interior design professionals, you can make an informed choice that aligns with your lifestyle, goals, and preferences. Whether you decide to embark on a new chapter in a different home or transform your current space into your dream haven, remember that the journey towards creating your ideal living environment begins with thoughtful reflection and planning…and will end with you being very glad that you invested in the process!

Here are 7 Popfox budget-friendly home updates that will bring the essence of spring into your living space.

  1. Accent Pillows and Throws: Swap out your winter pillows and throws for bright, cheerful ones in lightweight fabrics like cotton or linen. Opt for floral patterns, pastel hues, or vibrant solids to instantly inject a dose of springtime charm into your living room or bedroom.

  2. Fresh Flowers and Greenery: Bring the beauty of nature indoors by incorporating fresh flowers and greenery into your decor. Place a bouquet of tulips, daffodils, or hyacinths on your dining table or countertop for a pop of color and a delightful fragrance. You can also add potted plants or succulents to various corners of your home for a touch of greenery that lasts all season long. Locally, I’d recommend Terra Botanica for beautiful blooms in Perth - or of course, grow and pick your own!

  3. Decorative Mirrors: Mirrors are a fantastic way to amplify natural light and make your space feel brighter and more spacious. Cluster them together on a gallery wall or strategically place them to reflect sunlight and brighten up dark corners.

  4. Seasonal Centrepieces: Give your dining table or coffee table a seasonal update by creating a vibrant centrepiece using spring-inspired elements. Arrange a collection of decorative vases filled with freshly picked wildflowers, citrus fruits, or colorful Easter eggs for a charming and festive display that celebrates the season.

  5. Colourful Rugs: Transform the look and feel of a room instantly with the addition of a colorful area rug. Choose rugs in bright, cheerful hues or playful patterns to anchor your space and tie together your decor. A well-chosen rug can add warmth, texture, and personality to any room without breaking the bank. Check out Dunelm and also Quince & Cook for some beautiful scalloped rugs that scream spring / summer!
